The assignment was to write a thesis on some geomorphic province of North America. I convinced my professor to let me write mine on Iceland geomorphology, as I was graduating that year, and as a present to myself, I planned a trip there. Sadly, that actually didn't happen, my going to Iceland that summer. This paper was a lot more interesting to me nonetheless.
My topic however was quite relative to its time. Bear in mind that in the 1960s and '70s, that the idea of "continental drift" was a hotly debated topic. It was a hypothesis only 20 years old when I was student. Both sides completely convinced of their position, but as new evidence made it all undeniable, the challenge against it became as lame as the argument against global warming.
I remember as a boy asking my father, "doesn't Africa and South America look like they fit together?" Well apparently, once they did. (He said no. Though that's not particularly unreasonable.)
I haven't read this in nearly 30 years. I didn't even read it before I posted it today, and might never....
